Begin with the gateway
Komodo trips commonly begin from Labuan Bajo. Raja Ampat planning begins with reaching Sorong and arranging the onward connection. Compare door-to-door travel, not just the time on the boat, and leave a margin around flights and transfers.
Check the month separately
Indonesia Tourism highlights April–June and September–November as periods to consider for Komodo. Its Raja Ampat guidance points to October–April as a useful planning window. These are regional travel suggestions, not daily weather guarantees; do not apply one dry-season rule to the entire country.
Match the experience
For Komodo, consider a mix of ranger-led wildlife visits, island views and suitable water activities. For Raja Ampat, decide whether the central islands or a longer southern route is the main interest. Non-divers should ask exactly which activities fit the planned route.
Compare the whole cost
Include gateway nights, local transfers, accommodation or cabins, meals, guides and park-related charges. A cheaper daily rate can still lead to a more expensive trip when the total journey is longer.
A useful tie-breaker
If one itinerary forces too many transfers into your available days, choose the other or save both for a longer visit. It is better to give one region enough time than to spend the trip travelling between gateways.
