Three ways to approach the decision
The useful question is not “which card does everyone buy?” but “which option fits my actual trips?” An accepted contactless bank card avoids a separate top-up routine. A stored-value travel card separates transport from your bank card. A tourist pass is worth comparing when its current terms fit an intensive travel schedule. Check the live product conditions; this guide does not assume that a pass always saves money.
| Option | Potential advantage | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Contactless bank card | Use a card you already carry | Acceptance, overseas use and issuer fees |
| Stored-value travel card | Keep a separate transport balance | Purchase cost, top-ups and unused value |
| Tourist pass | A defined period of covered travel | Validity, exclusions and expected journeys |
What SimplyGo currently accepts
SimplyGo lists eligible contactless American Express, Mastercard and Visa cards, including foreign-issued cards. Its guidance says a SimplyGo account is not required for basic payment. Foreign-issued Mastercard and Visa cards incur a S$0.60 administration fee per day of use; the issuing bank may charge additional fees. Check the provider’s exceptions if your card is rejected. These details were checked on 7 September 2026.
Use one payment identity for the whole journey
A physical card, the same card in a phone and that card in a watch can be treated as different payment identities. Tap in and out with the same one. SimplyGo’s terms explain that mismatched entry and exit cards can cause separate charges. On buses, remember the exit tap too. Keep other cards away from the reader so the intended payment method is clear.
A simple routine at the station
Before entering, put the payment method you intend to use within easy reach. Let each traveller pass through separately and follow the reader’s confirmation. Avoid making the station entrance the first place you investigate whether your phone wallet is ready.
At the exit, use the same method. If a gate will not open or a reader displays an error, ask station staff instead of experimenting with several cards. Keep a short note of the station and time if you need to investigate a charge later.
Compare costs using your real schedule
Start with the trips you actually expect: airport to hotel, one or two neighbourhood changes per day and the journey back. Add the applicable payment fees and compare that total with the current pass cost. For illustration only, if your journey fares were S$9 over three days and a S$0.60 daily administration fee applied on all three days, the sum would be S$10.80 before issuer fees. S$9 is a hypothetical input, not a Singapore fare estimate.
Plan the last part of the journey
A station name is not a hotel entrance. Save the useful exit and the route to your accommodation. Think about luggage, rain and stairs when comparing a train journey with a road transfer. The cheapest fare can still be inconvenient if the final walk is unsuitable for your group.
Common questions
Do I need the SimplyGo app to pay?
Not for basic payment with an eligible contactless bank card. The provider describes account registration as optional for additional features.
Can I enter with my phone and leave with my physical card?
Use the same card or device at both ends of the journey, even when they relate to the same bank account.
Is a tourist pass always cheaper?
No. Compare its current price and coverage with the journeys you actually plan to take.
