West coast: a Kota Kinabalu base
If you want a city base with nearby island outings, investigate the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park area. Check current boat arrangements, park access and the specific activity offered before booking.
East coast: a separate itinerary
Semporna is a different base with its own island options, including Tun Sakaran Marine Park. Treat it as a separate routing choice with time for travel rather than an easy add-on to a short west-coast stay.
Match activities to the group
A diving programme and a general island day have different needs. Ask which sites suit non-divers, whether guiding is included and how permits work. Do not assume that a well-known dive site is available simply because it appears in a regional guide.
